Ten years ago, back in May 2008, Tina Turner surprised the world and her fans when it was announced that she would be back on tour one last time after an 8-year hiatus. Encouraged by her good friends Giorgio Armani and Sophia Loren, the idea grew in Tina’s mind until she gave up and started preparing for what would be become her ‘50Th Anniversary Tour‘.

And when you are a beloved legendary performer like TINA, your name is enough to sell tickets hence a very short promo tour and no new album. A performance with Beyonce at the 50th Grammy Awards ceremony and an appearance on Oprah with Cher would be sufficient to sell out the tour in the USA.

Today a look back at this period some ten years later with a 20-minute radio interview in which TINA talks about what she did during her 8 years of retirement and how she got to back on tour. The singer also opens on Amy Winehouse and her own past story. Plus some 9 minutes video footage from a TV interview TINA did with E! during the tour pre-production.

Tina Turner - The O2, Dublin - April 11, 2009 - 131

In only a couple of weeks, the TINA Musical will open its door at the Aldwych Theatre in London. Almost ten years ago at that same period Tina Turner was heavily touring the UK as a part of her 50th Anniversary Tour. Back in April 2009, Tina performed the final 2 shows in Dublin, Ireland. She already played 2 shows at the same venue in March. All four concerts were sold out in record time. Surely, one of the best gigs of the tour. Tina and the band were in a great mood. Originally planned to be the final shows of the tour, Tina, band and crew celebrated a tour closing party at the Guinness brewery. The audience was singing along to all of the songs, and the venue, an amphitheater, made sure everybody was close to the stage, making these the most intimate concerts of the tour.

Incredible atmosphere captured during this fiery rendition of Proud Mary where after almost 2H on stage and at nearly 70 years old at the time, TINA truly gives it all, leaving the audience mesmerised. All in all, an unforgettable experience! Below you’ll find a selection of songs from TINA performing in Dublin and photos taken by Sjef during the concerts on April 11 and 12.

Tina Turner - Ebony Magazine - May 1971 - Cover

In 1971, Ike and Tina Turner and their Revue were mainstream. Late in 1970, the band recorded their cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary”. The song was released the following January and became the duo’s best-selling single to date, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and selling well over a million copies, later winning them a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. The song’s parent album, ‘Workin’ Together’, became their most successful studio release, peaking at #25 on the Billboard 200.

The couple also toured Europe heavily, setting France on fire with a mythical concert at the Olympia or in The Netherlands with a show that would (years) later be released on DVD.
Later in 1971, a live album, Live at Carnegie Hall: What You Hear Is What You Get, was released, being certified gold in the U.S. That same year, they were reassigned to Liberty’s parent label, United Artists Records, after Liberty folded, releasing their later albums on United Artists.
With the money gained, Ike Turner built his own studio, Bolic Sound, a nightmarish maze of cameras, sex and cocaine where they would record the rest of their material.

Still celebrating the 30th Anniversary of  TINA’s Break Every Rule World Tour with an upload this week of selected songs from Tina’s performance at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany on July 3rd, 1987.  An audience recording of good quality if you consider it was recorded 30 years ago! Singing David Bowie’s ‘Girls’ and ‘It’s Only Love’ with John Miles, this concert tour is interesting on many levels:  Tina performed in front of massive audience in Europe and across the world, she sang certain songs she would never perform live again and unfortunately not that many footage of the Break Every Rule Tour have emerged. But let’s not lose hope to get our hands on more in the future and you can be sure you’ll find it on Tina Turner Blog! If you can listen to the f Enjoy!

Tonight, when I arrived I looked out and I saw so many people, I felt good! Thank You for coming!
